In recent months, accidents involving cyclists and motorists have increased in Brazil. From this, new initiatives are being created. The Rio de Janeiro, Olympic city, sport reference in Brazil, made the pages of newspapers for the death of cyclist Peter Nicolay while training on the edge of the South Zone. A risk that those who pedal runs daily.
- The events that happened this last month made the rider a visible face. The risk remains the same. The bad education not only of the driver. We see against cyclist in the tunnel, viaduct, but it's up to everyone to have a good sense - said the rider and trainer Walter Tuche.

The challenges of cyclists are the same, regardless of where they practice the sport. The traffic code is comprehensive and regulates specific points of the relationship between cyclists and drivers, but the laws governing the daily contact between the two are municipal, and differ from one place to another.
- Where we walk, we must be careful. We just happened to wear a seat belt when he was forced - Tuche said.
Fifteen days after the death of cyclist Peter Nicolay, the city of Rio de Janeiro opened the protected area to the cycling competition. 6km are in the city center exclusively banned for cycling, from 4 to 5:30 am.

- I am marveling, as the possibility of having a safely indoors so we can train is spectacular - said one cyclist in Flamengo.

Interviewed for the Australian rider, the initiative is good, although there is still danger for cyclists of Rio de Janeiro.

- It's a good start, but I believe that Rio should expand this initiative. In Australia, we have a cycling culture for a long time, so the drivers are very respectful. Here in Rio, traffic is complicated and more dangerous for cyclists.
It is in the air the campaign "
To deserve more respect and attention for our racing bicycle (road bike)."

- It excites me up as well as I live it, I love it. I'm not just their coach, I also training, I am exposed. It has a value for a community of cyclists and the world. I just have to thank.

What about you? I have practiced some physical activity today? Get off the couch!

I also am athlete, not professional, but I am athlete and cyclist, because I've been pedestrianisma and a half marathon (I had to stop these modalities by "slipped disc"), but want more support for cyclists in general, from the child who wants and can pedal until our dear the "Best Age".

Daniel lives in Ponta Grossa, in the region of Minas Paraná fields. On Wednesday (20), in his city, a cyclist was killed when the driver of a parked car
opened the vehicle door when he went by bicycle.

The situation occurred in Avenida João Manoel dos Santos Ribas in the “Nova Russia” neighborhood. The victim followed by Avenue corner, next to parking spaces when it was hit by the vehicle door in the neck.

Maringa, in the northern state also registered a major accident with cyclist last week. A driver was arrested for running over a cyclist in Cerro Azul Avenue on Saturday (23). The boy was drunk and with a suspended license, according to the Civil Police. A video shows the whole situation. In this case the rider did not die, but was seriously injured.

"I myself have already taken several cycling scares. I was hit three times already. I begin to ask for protection to God so I climb on the bike. It is an endless fear" he says. Daniel also mentions the death of the rider Claudio Clarindo in Santos, in the São Paulo coast. He was hit on Monday morning (25), while training in Rio-Santos highway with another rider.

'' It could be me 'is the phrase that I always think. So, I try to exercise caution. But I know it does not depend only on us. All we, cyclists, want is more respect, more care, more attention, more love the next on the part of drivers, "he explains.

For Daniel, local governments also have an important role in protecting cyclists, which includes the construction of bike paths. "We see so many bikes and dangerous streets, here in Ponta Grossa and other cities. There are people who use bicycle to work, pedaling 10-15 kilometers a day. It's not fair to feel fear or risk", he believes.

Cyclist without hands
Today, Daniel confesses to pedal less than it used to, especially since, after much struggle, managed to take the National Drivers License (CNH).

However, in 2007, for example, he made a long cycling trip: left Ponta Grossa and headed
Itajaíx in Santa Catarina to play games for disabled people. During the five days, it was about 350 km cycled.

Months after making the trip, Daniel discovered that his mother had cancer and promised that if she was cured, would bike to the National Shrine of Our Lady Aparecida, in São Paulox in October. Unfortunately, there was not time. One day after the rider's birthday, on June 19, his mother died.

But even so, in her honor, the rider made the route. In 10 days, he rode 810 km. It took three days just to cross the São Paulo Center. "Today, I have come out to ride the evening to unwind only. But never abandon my bike" he said.

Ponta grossa
In the past year in Ponta Grossa, the Integrated Service Center Trauma in Emergency (SIATE) attended 249 accidents involving cyclists in Ponta Grossa. 187 were falls, 88 collisions between cars and bicycles, 12 hits between motorcycles and bicycles and two accidents between trucks and bikes.

In a statement, Ponta Grossa Prefecture told the G1 that "has invested in bike paths from the beginning of the current administration, understanding that it is the cleanest and most sustainable mode for transport in urban areas.

For this, including the creation of bicycle lanes in new subdivisions as the Blue Crow and bands shared at the Presidential Garden and Vila Ildemira, through actions of the Municipal Public Works and Services. The same office also conducted bike path in Rio Branco Rua Visconde, linking the districts of Potteries and workshops.

Also by the Secretary of Public Works, in the coming months, should begin the construction of bike path that will have the Bishop Avenida Dom Geraldo Pellanda main access cyclists from the central area to the core Uvaranas Quarter.

The Municipal Planning in turn, has sought to include bike lanes whenever possible in new works. But the Institute for Research and Urban Planning of Ponta Grossa (Iplan) has developed projects to encourage the use of bicycles, providing for the creation of space for movement of cyclists in the vicinity of the Environmental Complex, with bike lane connecting the center to the Potteries district ( continuing the stretch that will lead to workshops).

The use of bicycles is also one of the main themes of the review of the Director of the City Plan, which is being developed under the coordination of Iplan, together with representatives of the entire civil society. "
